Scratch is a programming tool developed by MIT [Massachusetts Institute of Technology] that aims to teach the fundamentals of coding to young children in a fun and intuitive manner.

The most basic form of computer programming is block-based coding. Instead of having to start learning with complex and complicated textual lines of code, Scratchs' block-based coding offers students a great way to learn the fundamentals of programming in a more engaging and visually intuitive way.

Block Coding

Word Coding

The beginner programme will introduce students to coding by using the simple Scratch Icon Blocks before moving onto the more detailed Scratch Word Blocks.

Next, students will move onto the more advanced Scratch Word Block, drag and drop coding.

Using a visual interface, the platforms allow the student to simply drag and drop blocks in a sequence. Each block represents a line of code. So, in essence, the student is writing code without the use of text. As a result, the students quickly grasp the fundamental concepts and logic of programming.

On the Robotics and Coding Programme, students can apply their understanding of how to use a basic programming language and apply these skills to not only code robotics models but create animations, stories, websites and games. By learning Scratch coding students can transfer these skills to a whole range of different platforms. Furthermore, this simple, visual, and interactive way to learn code will allow students to quickly learn computational thinking and improve other important skills such as imagination, creativity, and communication.

The introduction of Python in the advanced programme enables young students to transition from block languages like Scratch to text-based languages. Python is a unique coding language and popular because it’s concise and easy to understand, whereas some languages use a perplexing combination of symbols and abbreviations. Python doesn’t. Python can be used to create a variety of different programs from building websites and software to automating tasks, conducting data analysis and machine learning.  Python is an industry-standard coding language used by companies like Instagram, google, youtube and Netflix.

From inception to completion of the Robotics and Coding Curriculum, students will have achieved the foundational skills in which to build their future providing them with the knowledge and experience to continue their education and compete in a growing number of modern industries.

Students will continue to develop more complex coding using word block language before being introduced to a text-based language like Python.

The Lenovo M10 HD Tablet

Go Learn STEM provides students with the Lenovo M10 HD tablet. The 10.1-inch touch screen allows the students to use the drag-and-drop coding function on the Lego® Education Spike™ App. The Lenovo M10 HD also enables the students to video and document their models.

Coding and Robotics Unit Book

Designed by experienced educators, the theme-based unit books provide a range of fun worksheets and activities aimed at developing the student’s English ability while engaging in team challenges, promoting critical thinking and encouraging investigation and experimentation. The unit book allows students to document their learning and track their development as they progress through the programme.
